An After-the-Trip Travel Journal
August 14th, 2007, turned into another blistering hot day. The morning wasn’t bad. I got out, walked around the campground and took some photographs. Stopping in the office about the time it was opening for the day, I chatted with the ladies who were working there for a bit, getting some information about the area to see if there was anything to do that wouldn’t be too hot. Unfortunately, there really wasn’t much that interested us for this trip.
We did drive into Wichita rather than sitting inside the camper all day — spent some time at a mall, but what can I say about that? It was a mall. We’ve seen so many that it would have to something really special for it to be memorable.
And of course, we stopped at Walmart on a mission. We had been having a bit of a problem with cabinet doors not staying shut in the camper with some of the rough pavement and had thought of a solution — locking devices used for child-proofing a kitchen.
When we were checking out, Karen made an error on the amount of cash back from our debit card. Instead of $80 quick cash, she selected $100 — and instead of 20s the cashier gave her a $100 bill!
Hundred dollar bills are kind of a pain to use sometimes, so right away Karen headed over to customer service to get the $100 bill changed. The lady behind the counter was agreeable, but she had to get the cash from one of the floor supervisors. She walked over and asked the supervisor for it. The supervisor took the $100 dollar bill and looked at it with a goofy grin on her face — her normal expression, I think — and said she’d have check it with a counterfeit marker.
By this time I was bemused and a bit exasperated and commented, “We got that here.”
She just smiled her goofy smile and went looking for a marker — which she found at the same register where we had been given the $100 in the first place.
It wasn’t counterfeit. Imagine that.
After that, we took a drive over to Hutchison and then back to the campground. It was just too hot to do anything outside.
It did cool down toward evening and I got some decent late afternoon and evening pictures.
Next, we’ll be driving to North Platte, Nebraska.
