Devil’s Den State Park is located in a deep valley of the Boston Mountain region of the Arkansas Ozarks.
In 1933, Lee Creek Valley was selected as the location for a new state park. Wood and stone park structures, including a stone dam across Lee Creek to form the 8-acre Lake Devil, were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps using local native materials.

… more than a tad unusual lately, here in Arkansas, as I’m sure it seems to people in a lot of other places.
But, the weather for the next week is…, well…, ah…, it’s Winter!
It’s winter like winter was when I was a kid growing up in Nebraska. It’s cold – and it’s staying cold.
And it’s doing it in a lot of places other than Arkansas.
Something called the Arctic Oscillation has gone into a deep negative phase, where atmospheric pressure in the Arctic is relatively high, while pressure is low in the middle latitudes. In the negative phase, frigid winter weather extends further into the middle of North America than usual.
Hopefully, this thing will moderate soon – but I’m not counting on it.
How’s the weather where you are?
After weeks of mostly wet weather, Halloween was dry — and we took a short road trip and hike.
Our first stop was at the Russellville, Arkansas, Downtown Fall Festival. Unfortunately, my camera’s white balance was set to compensate for inside lighting and I forgot to change it to auto white balance. So the composite images, even after post processing, are somewhat surreal, especially considering the holiday and all.

Our next stop was Petit Jean State Park. One of our favorite hikes is to Cedar Falls, the highest water fall in Arkansas — and the most photographed.
We figured that, with the recent wet weather, and rainfall totals way above normal, the falls should be pretty spectacular — and we were right. We’ve been taking this short, but arduous hike, periodically since 1980. We’ve never seen Cedar Creek with this much water in it.
